The German Baroque Gallery exhibits more than one hundred important masterpieces of 17th and 18th century painting from the collection of the City of Augsburg and various lenders. The focus is on works by Baroque painters active in Augsburg, including Joseph Heinz, Johann Evangelist Holzer and Matthäus Günther. While the paintings by Johann Heinrich Schönfeld and the circle of artists of the early Augsburg Academy give an impression of early Baroque painting, the works by Johann Bergmüller and his pupils Holzer and Günther trace the development towards the Rococo period, the conclusion of which can be traced in works by Anton Graf, Anton Raffael Mengs and their contemporaries. The exhibition is divided into different thematic groups to facilitate comparative viewing. The Karl and Magdalena Haberstock Foundation on the second floor features outstanding paintings by, for example, Lukas Cranach the Elder, Anthonis van Dyck, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Paolo Veronese, Canaletto, Nicolaes Berchem or Jacob Jordaens.
