Staatsgalerie in der Residenz Würzburg (State Gallery in the Würzburg Residence)
The gallery in the north wing of the Prince-Bishop's Residence houses precious examples of Venetian painting from the 16th to 18th centuries. Highlights include works by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and his son Giandomenico, which were created during their years in Würzburg, as well as outstanding mythological depictions by Antonio Bellucci, Federico Bencovich and Giovanni Battista Pittoni. The 16th and 17th centuries are represented by portraits by Leandro Bassano and paintings by Palma il Giovane. A remarkable curiosity are the portraits of Ottoman sultans, which - like some of the allegories of virtue also on display - are attributed to the successors of Paolo Veronese.
