The castle-like baroque building of the former Cistercian Abbey of Ebrach now houses a museum that deals with both the history of the market town and the history of the monastery itself. In the splendidly decorated rooms of the former abbot's residence, portraits, historical books, archives, vestments and sacred objects recall monastic life. One section sheds light on the forestry and agriculture of the Cistercians, another relates to the current use of the monastery as a correctional facility with an old detention room as was common until 1985.
