Friedrich August v. Kaulbach (1850-1920), today often referred to as the Prince of Painters, was one of the most famous and successful painters in Munich at the turn of the century. An expression of his lavish and representative lifestyle was the country house with studio and large garden in Ohlstadt, built in 1893 according to his own designs. His artistic estate, consisting of almost 300 paintings and oil sketches, around 1,000 drawings and a large collection of sketchbooks, photographs and autochromes, is housed here.In addition to the historic living quarters, around 50 of Kaulbach's works as well as works by Franz von Lenbach and Olaf Gulbransson can be seen in the artist's studio today.
