The rich culture and eventful history of the Jews in Augsburg and Swabia from the Middle Ages to the present day can be experienced in the west wing of the Augsburg synagogue (built 1914-1917). The collection focuses on ritual and cult objects from the 17th to the 20th century. Most of the silver objects come from destroyed Jewish communities in Swabia. They were made by well-known Augsburg goldsmiths and show astonishing interconnections between Jewish and Christian culture. The exhibition presents the history of the Jews in Augsburg as a history of migration, as a sequence of settlement and expulsion, of seeking and finding, but also as a loss of home. This draws attention to the coexistence, opposition and juxtaposition of the Jewish minority and the Christian majority. In this way, Jewish history becomes recognisable as part of Augsburg and Swabian history at the same time. The museum offers a diverse educational programme for all age groups.
