Glyptothek
The Königsplatz presents itself like an ancient market square, enclosed by the two Greek "temple complexes" Glyptothek and Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities) and the gateway building of the Propyläen. The vision came from King Ludwig I and was realised by Leo v. Klenze from 1816 to 1830 and Georg Friedrich Ziebland from 1838 to 1848.Behind the façade of the Klenze building with its simple Ionic columns is the Glyptothek, which can boast some superlatives: Munich's oldest public museum; the world's only museum dedicated solely to ancient sculpture ... Or in short: an important collection of ancient sculpture from 600 BC to 400 AD, represented by world-famous originals, such as the "Barberine Faun", the "Medusa Rondanini" or the pediment sculptures of the Aphaia Temple in Aegina. The tour amidst the freely displayed sculptures thus becomes a walk through the history of the development of ancient art.
