Deutsches Dampflokomotiv Museum (German Steam Locomotive Museum)
The farewell to the "steam horses" was also the birth of the German Steam Locomotive Museum, which owns around 35 of these locomotives, making it the largest specialised museum of its kind in Germany. The centrepiece of the museum is the 15-storey locomotive shed with a segmented turntable in which steam locomotive history and technology can be vividly experienced. Smaller in scale but no less impressive is the model railway layout with almost 270 metres of track.
Other highlights of the exhibition include the saloon carriage 10242, which accompanied important events in German history in the special train of the Federal Chancellor, and the steam locomotive 10 001, the highlight and conclusion of steam locomotive development in Germany. A ride on the small railway on a circuit in the open-air grounds rounds off the visit and makes it a very special railway experience.
The museum is located at the foot of the "inclined plane", Europe's first railway section for friction operation only. It can be explored on an educational trail. Another educational trail leads through the "railway village of Neuenmarkt", where many originally preserved buildings give an impression of life and work with and from the railway.
