Deutsch-deutsches Freilandmuseum (German-German Open Air Museum)
What was it like when a heavily guarded border separated the two German states? The original control and information facilities at the former Bavaria-Thuringia border section 44 bring the German division back to life. On the Bavarian side, there is an observation tower and a border information point as well as the extensive network of the former control and customs route. On the Thuringian side, there is a memorial to the German division: the complete GDR border system (state border, protective strip with guide tower, earth bunker and parts of the border signal fence) has been preserved here. The entire site of the Deutsch-deutsches Freilandmuseum (German-German Open Air Museum) is now considered a cross-border monument ensemble, connected by an approx. 3.5 km long monument conservation and nature trail, and lies along the route of the Erlebnisstraße der deutschen Einheit (German Unity Adventure Road).
