The Alte Pinakothek (Old Pinacoteca) has world-class works: Old German painting from the end of the 14th century to the Dürer period (Albrecht Dürer, Mathias Grünewald, Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Holbein the Elder.), Mannerist art, Early Netherlandish painting (Rogier van der Weyden, Dierick Bouts, Jan Gossaert), Italian Renaissance art (Sandro Botticelli, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian), Flemish painting of the 17th century (Peter Paul Rubens, Antonis van Dyck, Adriaen Brouwer), as well as Dutch painting of the time with paintings by Rembrandt and Frans Hals. The temporal framework is rounded off by works by Italian, French and Spanish painters of the 17th and 18th centuries (including Guido Reni, Luca Giordano, Giovanni B. Tiepolo, Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain, François Boucher, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and El Greco). The holdings of the Alte Pinakothek (Old Pinacoteca) go back to the collecting activities of the Bavarian Wittelsbach dynasty since Wilhelm IV (1508-1550) and were expanded by other important collections until the 19th century. Under King Ludwig I (1825-1848), Leo v. Klenze erected the building from 1826 to 1836, which was reopened in 1957 after severe damage in 1943/44 and has shone in new splendour since 2018 after extensive renovation work. During the temporary closure of the Neue Pinakothek (New Pinakoteca), a selection of masterpieces of 19th century art is on display on the ground floor of the Alte Pinakothek (East Wing).
