Event: Guided tour of the city

Sunday, 25 October 2026, 14:00 - 15:30

The (former) cemeteries of Landau and their gravestones

Location: Unterer Eingang der Stadtpfarrkirche

The Holy Cross Cemetery was once the burial ground for ordinary people, whilst the upper classes were laid to rest around the parish church of St Mary. As late as 1784, the district judge of Landau warned in vain against the ‘putrid, infectious vapours emanating from dead bodies’; in 1804, the cemetery at the parish church was closed for hygienic reasons. Fearing contagion, the victims of the 1713 plague epidemic were buried some distance from the town in a separate cemetery, the exact location of which is revealed by historical maps. After the Second World War, a search for a crypt next to the Holy Cross Cemetery Church proved successful. City archivist Manfred Niedl will explain who was buried there and much more during a 1½-hour guided tour of the (former) Landau cemeteries. The meeting point is on Sunday, 25 October, at 2 pm at the lower entrance to the parish church. The participation fee of 3 euros is payable in cash.
