Event: For Heritage Open Day: Of fishermen and all manner of monastic relics

Sunday, 13 September 2026, 13:30 - 15:30

A stroll around Kelheim’s landmark, Fischerdörfl, at the foot of Michelsberg – the gateway to the “Weltenburger Enge” National Nature Monument

Location: Treffpunkt: Infoplattform / Schiffsanlegestelle Donau.

For centuries, the fishermen of Oberkelheim and the Franciscan Order kept a watchful eye on one another to ensure the fair distribution of the estates and benefices along the East Bavarian Way of St James. Fish for the fishermen and wine for the monks – this was one of the many compromises between the citizens of Kelheim and the church representatives. However, both were dependent on one another, as fish and wine are the original symbols of Christianity. The walk leads along the Danube to the western end of Oberkelheim, past the river master’s house through the Löwengrube up to Michelsberg, to the western end of the former abbey and back through the eastern part of the ‘Weltenburger Enge’ National Nature Monument via the Old Harbour to the starting point.
