Südsee-Sammlung und Historisches Museum Obergünzburg (South Sea Collection and Historical Museum Obergünzburg)
For 10 years, Karl Nauer (1874-1962) from Obergünzburg served as captain of North German Lloyd in German New Guinea. When he returned to the Allgäu from the South Pacific in 1913, Nauer donated an extensive ethnographic collection from the former German colonial territory to his local museum. To complement the colonial-era collection, a traditional house from the island of Pentecost, Vanuatu, was relocated to the new museum building for the reopening in 2009 as part of an intercultural encounter project. With its history of origin, the South Seas collection is a special feature of the southern German museum landscape. The neighboring former vicarage from the 18th century presents the artistic legacy of the local Nazarene artist Johannes Kaspar (1822-1885) alongside folklore and local history collections. Both museums claim to convey local history and past everyday culture(s) in a vivid and accessible way.
