The oldest open-air museum in southern Germany has been open to visitors for over 60 years. The focus of the Swabian Farmers' Museum is on rural cultural history between the Allgäu and the Ries, and more than 30 historic buildings - solid and half-timbered structures as well as houses built entirely of wood - provide an overview of building methods in Bavarian Swabia from the 17th century onwards. The mighty Nattererhof and the makeshift home from Gessertshausen near Augsburg tell of the far-reaching structural changes after the Second World War. Farm gardens, fields with cultivated plants and fruit trees enrich the outdoor areas. In between, old breeds of domestic animals such as the Bavarian country goose, the Augsburg chicken or the Hällische Landschwein, some of which are threatened with extinction, cavort and complete the picture of former rural life.
The extensive collection on 500 years of southern German shooting, which is presented in the "Haus zur Schützenkultur", is unique. The spectrum of topics ranges from the crossbow to the precision rifle, from the sport shooting competitions of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich to critical aspects of gun misuse and gun control. A digitally visualised historical shooting meadow is one of the museum's special features.
