Kutschenmuseum (Carriage Museum)
The Carriage Museum in Schwabsoien displays a private collection of more than 30 historic carriages and sleighs, which the collector Johann ‘Johnny’ Hartmann has assembled and restored over a period of more than 20 years. The exhibits date mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries and showcase the diversity of the art of carriage-making during that period. Many of the vehicles were sourced from all over Germany or acquired through exchange, and are characterised by their meticulous craftsmanship and varied designs.
The collection includes both prestigious city and touring carriages as well as specialised vehicles. Numerous items are not merely on display but are also harnessed for special occasions. The museum, which opened on 30 May 2004, was financed entirely from its own funds. It offers insights into historical mobility, social customs and the craft of carriage-making, and is aimed at visitors with an interest in the history of technology, equestrian culture and restoration work.
