The Fränkisches Freilandmuseum Fladungen (Franconian Open Air Museum Fladungen) is located on the outskirts of Bavaria's northernmost town. The 12-hectare museum grounds currently contain around 20 reconstructed farmsteads and village community buildings. The farms, the two mills, the brewery and the so-called "Kalthaus" (cold house) as well as the Dorfschule (village school), church, shepherd's hut and Büttnerei (ironworks) document 350 years of village life in Lower Franconia. They are embedded in a varied cultural landscape with gardens, fields and orchards. Old breeds of domestic animals such as the Rhön sheep and the Yellow Franconian cattle bring life to the museum village. Another special feature are trips with the "Rhön-Zügle", an old steam locomotive that runs between Mellrichstadt and Fladungen on several Sundays during the museum season.
