The Museum Fünf Continents (Museum Five Continents) tells of the cultural wealth of mankind, to be found in things of everyday life as well as in ritual objects or works of art. Founded in 1862 as the State Museum of Ethnology, it is the first ethnological museum in Germany. Its collection is correspondingly large: over 160,000 ethnographica and works of art as well as contemporary art of non-European peoples, 135,000 photographic documents and a specialist library comprising over 100,000 books. In the spirit of cosmopolitanism, cultural dialogue and respect for people, the museum enables visitors to discover and understand the uniqueness and diversity, but also the commonalities, of cultures around the globe in its permanent exhibitions, themed special exhibitions and events.
