Mainkofen District Hospital: Memorial site
Opened in 1911 as a sanatorium and nursing home, the Mainkofen District Hospital was regarded as a modern example of reform psychiatry at the time. The institution experienced its darkest chapter under National Socialism. At the time, people with disabilities or mental illnesses were considered inferior from a biological and social point of view. Over 1,300 men, women and young people from Mainkofen died as a result of Nazi euthanasia. Following a decision by the district council in 2011, a memorial was opened on 28 October 2014. It commemorates the victims of the former Mainkofen sanatorium and nursing home during the Nazi era.
