Ludwig II is arguably the best-known and most enigmatic figure in Bavarian history. His reign gave rise to castles, myths and legends, and ultimately came to an end with what is probably Bavaria’s most famous unsolved death. Indebted, lonely and deemed mentally ill, Ludwig died on 13 June 1886, together with the psychiatrist Dr Bernhard von Gudden, in Lake Starnberg. From June onwards, a long-term exhibition at the Museum Starnberger See will be dedicated to his final four days there.
