‘Man is only truly human when he plays,’ as Friedrich Schiller once said. Where, if not in Nuremberg, the city of toys, could this be more true? In 1926, the exhibition ‘Das Spielzeug’ (The Toy) took place in what was then the Fränkische Galerie, featuring work by a number of professors and artists from the School of Applied Arts. The catalogue notes: ‘From Professor H. Gradl’s class come the original wooden animals and fantasy figures by Georg Weidenbacher – to be regarded as independent works – including the red horse, the charioteer and other fantastical pieces’. The Kunstvilla is marking this anniversary by presenting the theme of children’s play in painting and object art, artists’ designs for toys, and children’s book illustrations by Nuremberg artists in the major special exhibition ‘Art is a Game That’s Fun’.
