Event: war children

Saturday, 19 September 2026, 18:00 - 20:00

Opening reception with Heike von Schlebrügge and discussion with contemporary witnesses, literary scholars Dr Hiltrud and Prof. Dr Günter Häntzschel

Location: Erinnerungsort Badehaus (Place of remembrance bathhouse)

What was it like during the war? How did your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents experience nights of bombing, flight, loss, persecution and expulsion as children?

Illustrator, author and goldsmith Heike von Schlebrügge explores these questions, which are still suppressed in many German families, in her special exhibition at the BADEHAUS.

Using unusual imagery, she sets out in search of the formative memories and experiences of her parents as so-called war and post-war children. Using drawings and old doll's houses, she stages impressive dioramas depicting flight, nights in air-raid shelters, the Friedland camp, her grandfather's return from Russian captivity and many other experiences typical of the time. The materiality of the historical dollhouses and their associated materials stand in stark contrast to the artist's drawings.

The vernissage will be complemented by a conversation with the artist's parents, literary scholars Dr Hiltrud and Prof. Dr Günter Häntzschel.

➜ Cost: €15, school pupils, trainees and students €5, donations for refreshments welcome.
