"The gaze from the picture" describes the special effect of paintings in which the figures depicted appear to make direct contact with us. Through the deliberate use of gaze direction, composition and posture, the impression of an encounter beyond the boundaries of the picture is created. Such depictions draw viewers into the scene, breaking the distance between the artwork and the audience and revealing how painting has played with perception, communication and proximity for centuries.
