Event: In the Emperor’s Footsteps

In 1913, Emperor Wilhelm II visited Kelheim: to mark the ‘Imperial Year’—which coincided with the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig, the 50th anniversary of the Hall of Liberation, and the 25th anniversary of Emperor Wilhelm II’s accession to the throne—a grand spectacle was expected in Kelheim. Even nature was shaken, with a massive rock breaking loose from the Jurassic rock on Michelsberg. But was that really the case? Or did they simply want to seize the opportunity to flatter the Emperor during his visit, so that he would be sure to like it here? True to the motto: If the Emperor likes it, the people like it. And in the Emperor’s wake, they hoped for many summer visitors from out of town as guests. You can find out what marketing entailed back then on an approximately two-hour guided tour with nature and landscape guide Thomas Dorsch, following the old Beer Route to the former Schottenhof and through what was once a Celtic settlement area, back to the Altmühl.
