Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (Central Institute for Art History)
Founded in 1946, the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (ZI) is the only non-university research institute for art history in Germany. As a nationally and internationally oriented and networked research institution, the ZI sees itself as a forum for academic exchange and discussion of current topics in art history. It offers a dense programme of public academic events. Located in the heart of Munich's Königsplatz art district, the Institute is housed in the former NSDAP administration building, where the American military government set up a Central Collecting Point in 1945 for the restitution of art expropriated by the Nazi regime.
