Westallgäuer Heimatmuseum (West Allgäu Museum of Local History)
The rich collection of West Allgäu artefacts from prehistoric and early historical times to the 20th century now fills 23 rooms of the over 300-year-old former inn "Zum Löwen". Objects of local customs and costumes, evidence of popular piety and sacred art bear witness to the rich cultural history of the village and its surroundings. Among the sculptures from the 15th century, figures of saints from the Multscher school around 1450 and by Ivo Strigel around 1500 are particularly noteworthy. One focus is on bourgeois furniture, which was put together to form cosy ensembles with furnishings typical of the period. An original shop interior from the mid-18th century as well as tools, machines and products from the local straw hat industry illustrate aspects of economic life. Another special feature of the museum is a self-portrait by the painter Angelika Kaufmann, alongside various paintings by patrons, citizens and farmers.
