Universitätsmuseum für Islamische Kunst (University Museum of Islamic Art)
The world's largest collection of early Islamic bronzes (7th-13th centuries) is housed in a historic town house in the middle of Bamberg's old town. In addition to metalwork, the museum also includes a significant collection of ceramics. The objects come mainly from the Iranian region (today's Iran and Afghanistan) and provide a fascinating insight into medieval life on the Silk Road. Writing implements, medical and cosmetic utensils, but also everyday objects such as oil lamps, kettles and jugs and even jewellery show how a household was equipped in those days. Decorations of vegetal and abstract ornaments as well as images of nature and animals document the high standard of craftsmanship in the Oriental Middle Ages. They are executed in masterly techniques of metallurgy such as repoussé, hallmarking, chasing, inlay and openwork.
