Stadtresidenz Landshut (City residence Landshut)
The first Renaissance palace on German soil is located, hidden behind a classicist façade, in the middle of the old town of Landshut. Duke Ludwig X had a city palace built here from 1536 onwards (today known as the "German Building"). During a trip to Italy, he was inspired by the splendour of the Palazzo del Te in Mantua and engaged Italian master builders for an extension to the Landshut residence - the "Italian Building" was created. The Renaissance ceiling painting with a pictorial programme committed to the erudition of humanism has been largely preserved. At the end of the 18th century, the building was altered according to classical taste. The so-called Birkenfeld Rooms date from this period. With their rare French paper wallpapers from 1803, they represent a unique ensemble.
