Weilheim lies at the heart of the culturally and historically significant Pfaffenwinkel region - so called because of its high density of churches, chapels and monasteries. Art flourished along with the monasteries, and the town museum, founded in 1882 as the "Museum of the Pfaffenwinkel", boasts an impressive collection of sculptures from the 15th to 19th centuries (including works by important sculptors of the "Weilheim" school after 1600) and paintings from the 17th to 19th centuries. The most important work from the early 16th century is the "Pollinger Schmerzensmann" by Hans Leinberger. There are also archaeological finds, exhibits on the history of the town, religious customs, local crafts, furniture and room furnishings as well as an annual nativity scene from 1723.
