The Stadtmuseum Nördlingen (City Museum Nördlingen), founded in 1867, is as rich in tradition as the city itself. Skull finds from the Palaeolithic Age mark the beginning of the tour through the history of settlement, which leads past metal-age and Roman finds to the Middle Ages. Trade and fairs, guilds and crafts as well as the jurisdiction of the Free Imperial City form a focal point of the exhibition. The Thirty Years' War with the Battle of Nördlingen in 1634, which is presented in the form of a tin figure diorama, also had a major impact. Authentically narrated, visitors learn about the horrors for the population and how the battle influenced the course of history. The history of the church from the Middle Ages to the Reformation is illustrated with panel paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries. Masterpieces by Friedrich Herlin, Hans Schäufelin and Sebastian Taig in the hospital hall, which was renovated in 1518, illustrate the faithfulness, but also the wealth and political importance of Nördlingen. The Stadtmuseum Nördlingen (City Museum Nördlingen) also shows the expulsion and arrival in Nördlingen of displaced persons from the Tetschen-Bodenbach district.
