Städtische Sammlungen im Stadtschloss Lichtenfels (Municipal collections in the Lichtenfels City Palace)
The Lichtenfels town castle is enthroned in an exposed position above the roofs of the old town and was built in 1555 by Caspar von Sternberg against the resistance of the local population. The building has had a chequered history. Depending on who owned it, it was used as an aristocratic residence and prince-bishop's lodgings, then as a granary, a wine merchant's warehouse, a drying room for herbs and finally as a materials store for a basketware company. In 1970, the town castle was acquired by the town of Lichtenfels and reopened in 1991 after more than 15 years of construction and restoration.
Since 2023, the town palace has housed the municipal collections and is open to visitors. In addition to the permanent exhibition ‘7 Salix and 7 Pleiades’, an exhibition of willow costumes by Rostock artist Berit Ida, the collections of the town of Lichtenfels on the history of beer and brewing as well as the railway and basket trade can also be seen on the top floor. The ‘Schneyer Porcelain’ collection can be marvelled at in the gallery. In addition, the fresco room and changing special exhibitions in the Knights' Hall invite visitors to explore.
