Today, the character of the Nymphenburg Palace Park is shaped by Friedrich Ludwig Sckell's transformation in the first quarter of the 19th century into a landscape garden in the English style with natural planting, picturesque lakes and winding paths. As a reminder of the former important Baroque garden, which Elector Max Emanuel had laid out from 1701 onwards on the model of the strictly geometrical French gardens, Sckell retained the Great Parterre and the central axes such as the central canal with its concluding cascade, thus creating a charming combination of two such contrasting garden styles. The park of Schloss Nymphenburg (Nymphenburg Palace) is home to a unique gem: the "Amalienburg", a palace built from 1731 to 1739 according to designs by François Cuvilliés the Elder, which is considered one of the most precious creations of the European Rococo. Three other park castles also set architectural accents: Joseph Effner designed the Chinese-style tea house "Pagodenburg" (1716-1719), the bathing castle "Badenburg" (1718-1721) and the "Magdalenenklause", an artificial ruin (from 1725).
