Schloss Hohenschwangau (Hohenschwangau Castle)
The later King Maximilian II acquired the badly damaged 12th-century castle in 1832 and had it rebuilt as a palace in the English neo-Gothic style - entirely in keeping with the Romantic spirit of the time and according to designs by the architectural and theatre painter Domenico Quaglio. The rooms are furnished with objects from the time of construction, the murals were executed according to designs by Moritz v. Schwind, among others, and depict themes from Germanic and German history and legends. Crown Prince Ludwig, later King Ludwig II of Bavaria, spent part of his childhood here and was inspired to build Schloss Neuschwanstein (Neuschwanstein Castle) on a rock opposite.
