Schloss Dachau (Dachau Castle)
Schloss Dachau (Dachau Castle) stands in a prominent position on the Schlossberg hill in the city and dates back to an early medieval castle of the Counts of Dachau. From 1546 to 1577, under the dukes Wilhelm IV and Albrecht V, it was extended by the Munich court architects Heinrich Schöttl and Wilhelm Egkl into a mighty four-winged complex and became the preferred country residence of the Munich court. The magnificent Renaissance wooden ceiling in the banqueting hall, considered one of the most important in southern Germany, dates from this period. At the beginning of the 19th century, three quarters of the palace complex were demolished; only the ballroom wing, baroquised by Joseph Effner between 1715 and 1717, remained. In the 19th century, Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell extended the Baroque courtyard garden with an English landscape garden; when the weather is right, it offers a wonderful panoramic view as far as the Alps.
