Residenz Ellingen (Residence Ellingen)
For over 400 years, Ellingen was the residence of the Landkomtur of the Ballei Franconia, the largest and richest of the 13 provinces of the Teutonic Order, and thus the centre of a far-reaching territorial and economic power. After the decline of the Order, the new Baroque palace was built here from 1718 under the architect Franz Keller. In 1775, the French master builder Pierre Michel d'Ixnard (1723-1795) carried out alterations in the style of early classicism. Finally, in 1815, Carl Philipp Prince von Wrede had some of the rooms refurbished with precious silk and paper wallpaper, furniture, glass and bronzes from Paris. Together with d'Ixnard's stuccowork and furniture, these rooms are among the most important works of interior art of classicism in Bavaria.
