Inspired by the excavations in Pompeii, King Ludwig I had this ideal replica of a Roman residence built by the architect Friedrich v. Gärtner in 1840-1848 - not for himself, but as a visual object that would enable art lovers to study ancient culture in this country as well. The reception and guest rooms, the kitchen and the dining rooms are arranged on the ground floor around two inner courtyards, the atrium with its water basin and the leafy Viridarium (recreational garden). For the magnificent painting of the interiors and the mosaic floors, antique models were copied or imitated. Badly damaged during the Second World War, the Pompejanum (Pompeianum) was restored and completed by 1994. Since then, original Roman works of art from the holdings of the Staatliche Antikensammlungen (State collections of antiquities) and the Glyptothek (Glyptothek) in Munich have also been on display here. In addition to marble sculptures, small bronzes and glasses, two marble thrones of the gods are among the most valuable exhibits. On the upper floor, smaller objects from the ancient household are on display, from writing pens to bronze dog tags, from fish hooks to padlocks, as well as medical and cosmetic devices, jewellery and children's toys.
