The national colours - pure coincidence, by the way - are not the only thing that connects Greece with Bavaria. King Ludwig I's enthusiasm for antiquities is legendary, but who knows that his son Otto was the first king of Greece? On the spot where the prince took leave of his father in 1832 to begin his reign in Nafplio, the municipality of Ottobrunn is located today. It has dedicated a special museum to the memory of its namesake. It displays a good 500 exhibits on early 19th century Philhellenism, the Greek struggle for freedom and Otto's 30-year reign, as well as objects from his personal possessions and a gallery with paintings, watercolours and graphic works (by Klenze, Schinkel and Rottmann, among others) and sculptures (by Imhof, among others), as well as portrait medals.
