Museumszentrum Rehau (Museum center Rehau)
Rehau, Bavaria's only model town. Rehau, home of the sound film. The small town in the Fichtelgebirge has a few special features to offer! The Museumszentrum Rehau (Museum centre Rehau) tells you all about them.
Three town fires shaped the history and, above all, the townscape: after the fire of 1817, Rehau was completely rebuilt at the instigation of King Max in accordance with fire protection technology, as a model town for other Bavarian towns (which never followed). The museum uses two models of the town to demonstrate the major differences before and after the fire.
The main focus is on the ears of Hans Vogt (born in Wurlitz) from Rehau, who revolutionised film history together with two colleagues. After more than 150 patents, they invented the optical sound process and thus the sound film in 1922 ... and almost went bankrupt over it. By the time the revolution finally took place, the patent had long since been sold.
Of course, the museum has much more on display, including an exhibition on local history, a doll collection and the Silesian and Ascher Heimatstube (local history parlour).
