The world of the Nuremberg merchant families of the 16th century comes to life in the Cloth Palace, built between 1533 and 1544 in the middle of a Renaissance garden. Some of the objects exhibited here were already part of the original furnishings of the castle. In addition to arts and crafts, furniture and tapestries, the top-class collection also includes paintings from the 15th to the 19th century, among them the portrait of the "Jerusalem Rider" Hans VI Tucher from the workshop of Dürer's teacher Michael Wolgemut or the Tucher dinner service by Wenzel Jamnitzer from the 16th century. A special treasure is the Hirsvogel Hall, which was lavishly reconstructed after its destruction in the Second World War. With its magnificent ornamental wall panelling by Peter Flötner and the famous ceiling painting depicting the "Fall of Phaethon" by Dürer's pupil Georg Pencz, it is one of Germany's most beautiful Renaissance interiors. Newly created busts of the first twelve Roman emperors complete the ensemble.
