Museum Solnhofen - Die Welt in Stein (Museum Solnhofen - The world in stone)
There is a lot to see in the "PalaeoZoo": an underwater world with sharks, giant rays and a school of fish, a predatory dinosaur with a bushy tail and even a 70 cm tall archaeopteryx chick ... and yet not a sound can be heard. Because the animals on display here are all fossilised. And they have been for 150 million years! The flora and fauna of the former "Solnhofen Archipelago", a landscape of islands, lagoons and coral reefs on the edge of an ocean, can be experienced in the Solnhofen Museum using impressive original fossils. And just like in a living zoo, the exhibits are organised by habitat and the environment and living conditions are explained. The highlight is the "Icon Room", the Archaeopteryx Worlds: Two of these world-famous feathered predatory dinosaurs can be marvelled at here. In addition, the prehistoric bird is presented as a digital 3D reconstruction with projection in the room, while the topic of lithography (lithographic printing) is dealt with on the upper floor. Invented by Alois Senefelder around 1798, it gave Solnhofen a huge boost, as only Solnhofen stone is suitable for printing purposes. Worth seeing are the world's largest lithograph and a model quarry.
