Museum KulturLand Ries (Museum KulturLand Ries)
The Nördlinger Ries, a unique meteorite crater in the north of Bavarian Swabia, lies in the immediate vicinity of the Swabian Alb and southern Middle Franconia. The Museum KulturLand Ries is located in the centre of this impressive cultural landscape in the UNESCO Global Geopark Ries.Maihingen is famous for its former monastery. It was founded in 1437 as the Brigitten Monastery, reoccupied by the Minorites in 1607 and abolished in 1802. The baroque monastery complex with the splendidly furnished church and the surrounding farm buildings still form a charming ensemble today. The KulturLand Ries Museum, a regional museum under the sponsorship of the district of Swabia, is located in two listed buildings of the former monastery: the brewery and the monastery farmhouse.
The two diverse permanent exhibitions offer interesting insights into the agricultural history and everyday culture of the Nördlinger Ries. During the museum season, special exhibitions, events such as the GenussKulturMarkt or the potato festival and educational hands-on programmes attract numerous visitors to the museum grounds, which cover over 6,000 m². Museum fields are cultivated with conventional, old and rare crops. A bee garden with three bee colonies, through which the accessible Museum KulturLand Ries app leads, and idyllic orchards invite visitors to explore and linger.
