The former Benedictine abbey of Asbach around the monastery church built by François Cuvillies the Younger at the end of the 18th century houses unique art treasures.
On display are plaster casts of important works of art from the Middle Ages and early modern times from all over Bavaria, ranging from architectural sculptures from Regensburg Cathedral to the Ebersberg founder's tomb and the Moriscan dancers. An extensive collection of artistically worked iron presents locks and keys, fittings and tools, as well as grave crosses, guild and inn signs and various grilles from the 15th to the 19th century. The title "Glaube und Bild" (Faith and Image) conceals a unique collection of images and signs of piety that the folklorist Rudolf Kriss (1903-1973) collected from numerous Central European countries. It covers the areas of domestic devotion (rosaries, prayer books, carved figures and reverse paintings on glass, sacramentals and devotional objects), the veneration of Christ, Mary and the saints (mainly extraordinary depictions from the Passion story) and finally pilgrimage customs to venerated images of grace with votive offerings and votive tablets.
