The baroque Michelbach Castle, formerly a noble country seat, houses the Museum der Stadt Alzenau (Museum of the city of Alzenau). Thanks to modern interactive media technology, the history of Alzenau comes alive here. Under the motto "Regionality and change - forays through a border region", the museum is dedicated to the special historical situation of the region, which has always been characterised by borderlines, regional independence and radical upheavals. This is also reflected in the individual thematic areas, which deal, among other things, with the surrounding competing dominions and the struggle for the "Freigericht" (free court) in the Middle Ages, or with Alzenau's situation in the 19th century as a Bavarian outpost with economic orientation towards Hesse. The contrast between the conurbation of Frankfurt and the recreational area of the Spessart is also addressed here.
