Missionsmuseum der Erzabtei St. Ottilien (Mission Museum of the Archabbey of St. Ottilien)
St Ottilien is the oldest missionary house in Germany. The first Benedictines set off from here to East Africa as early as 1887, and then to Asia in 1909. They sent crates of objects back home to familiarise their successors with their future world: objects from everyday culture and traditional religions, unique works of art and many zoological and botanical natural objects. Since 1911, the artefacts have been on display in a museum next to the monastery church. Following extensive refurbishment in 2013-2015, the concept and design have been modernised. Today, the exhibition comprises around 6000 ethnological objects from East and South Africa and Korea, over 500 animal specimens and selected personal memorabilia of the missionaries and offers an exciting insight into the history and aspects of St Ottilien's missionary work.
