The Veste Coburg, also called "the Franconian crown", rises high above the town with its mighty walls and towers and is worth a visit in itself. The medieval castle flourished at the beginning of the 16th century as a palace for the Saxon electors and served as a fortress until the 19th century. Extensive collections are the reason for the international importance of the art collections of the Veste: the copperplate engraving cabinet, the collection of precious Venetian glass and the historical weapons collection including the armoury of the 16th/17th century. The collection of old German paintings (Dürer, Grünewald, Holbein, Burgkmair, etc.), including over 20 paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder, is also outstanding. Other special features are the two oldest carriages still in working order in Europe (16th century) and a collection of Baroque carousel sleighs.Although the Veste was remodelled in the spirit of castle romanticism, some important original rooms have been preserved: the "Jagdintarsienzimmer", a completely wood-panelled state room from 1632, the two "Lutherzimmer", where the reformer lived for six months in 1530, and the "große Hofstube", a banqueting hall completed in 1504, which is one of the largest secular rooms of its time. The collection holdings of contemporary glass and ceramics are exhibited in the "Europäisches Museum für Modernes Glas" (European Museum of Modern Glass) in the park of Schloss Rosenau (Rosenau Castle), Rödental.
