Kreismuseum Walderbach (District Museum Walderbach)
The folklore collections of the Cham District Museum have been housed since 1965 in the Baroque convent building of the former Cistercian monastery of Walderbach am Regen. The accessible ‘SchauRaum’ on the ground floor of the museum hosts changing exhibitions on everyday culture, history and cultural history, featuring items from the museum’s collections, amongst other sources. Educational programmes and guided tours cater to a variety of audiences.
The history of Walderbach Monastery dates back to the 12th century. After turbulent years during the Reformation, the monastery was rebuilt in the Baroque style. Well worth seeing is the former monastery’s banquet hall, featuring a ceiling painting by Otto Gebhard from around 1765/70; for the past 30 years, it has provided the atmospheric setting for the renowned series ‘Festive Concerts in the Baroque Hall’ organised by the Cham district and the municipality of Walderbach. The former monastery church, now a parish church, is a 12th-century three-aisled hall with significant Romanesque vault paintings. A stroll through the former monastery garden, now a district educational garden, the Prelates’ Garden with its fountain, and a stop at the monastery café round off a visit to Walderbach.
