Wechterswinkel Abbey, founded around 1140 as a cistercian monastery, is one of the oldest women's monasteries in Germany. During its heyday from the 13th to the 15th century, over 100 noble nuns lived here. The convent was dissolved in 1589 and from then on served as a granary, and today it is dedicated to art and culture. Contemporary art is exhibited in the gallery on the ground floor. One focus is on sculpture. Concerts, lectures, literary evenings and theatre performances take place in the concert hall above. On the second floor, the permanent exhibition created in 2024 "WÜRDEVOLL– Impulse zur Menschwerdung" ("DIGNIFIED – Impulses for Becoming Human"), in which traditional nativity scenes and contemporary art come face to face. Concerts in the cultural programme also take place in the former monastery church, now the parish church. The historic ensemble with its inner courtyard also provides the backdrop for craft markets, culinary events and open-air events.
