Kaiserburg Nürnberg (Imperial Castle Nuremberg)
Nuremberg Castle was one of the most important imperial palaces of the Holy Roman Empire in the Middle Ages. For centuries, it was at the centre of European history, a secure base and a prestigious retreat for the head of the empire. Built under the Hohenstaufen dynasty and their successors on top of older buildings, the extensive castle complex is world-famous as a landmark of Nuremberg. The exhibition "Kaiser-Reich-Stadt" is attuned to the historical rooms, such as the Romanesque double chapel (around 1200) and the Palas with its two large halls, and asks how the Old Empire functioned. With valuable loans and stagings at authentic locations, it shows Nuremberg's golden age and makes the unique history of the castle from the Middle Ages to the 19th century vivid. In the famous Deep Well, the castle's water supply is demonstrated. The Sinwell Tower offers a panoramic view of the castle and the old town. Photographs from before and after the Second World War make visitors aware of the relationship between destruction and reconstruction.
