Historisches Museum Regensburg (Historical Museum Regensburg)
"Art and cultural history of Regensburg from the Stone Age to the 19th century": although this summary is accurate, it does not do justice to the Historisches Museum Regensburg (Historical Museum Regensburg), which houses the "first Regensburg" from around 5500 BC, the founding inscription of the Roman Castra Regina, to which the city owes its name, a treasure trove of coins and masterpieces of medieval art. In the rooms of the former Minorite monastery, the museum brings together exhibits from Regensburg's most important eras, starting with the "Prehistoric Upper Palatinate", which ranges from the Palaeolithic Age to the end of Celtic civilisation, followed by the section on Roman times with a wealth of archaeological material. However, the focus is on the "Middle Ages" section, which paints a vivid picture of life in the Free Imperial City in the past. Winged altars, panel paintings, sculptures and arts and crafts also tell of the heyday of artistic creativity in the 15th and 16th centuries.
