Historiengewölbe mit Staatsverlies (History Vault with State Dungeon)
Since 1966, the small, but fine Historiengewölbe mit Staatsverlies (History Vault with State Dungeon) has been impressively depicting the situation of the town during the Thirty Years' War. The focus is on the legendary events surrounding the conquest of Rothenburg by Imperial troops in 1631. Twelve vaults provide interesting insights into a lansquenet guardroom, the fortifications and the town's readiness to defend itself, weapons, guns and military equipment. Other military equipment and original flags of the Rothenburg troops can also be marvelled at. Learn interesting facts about General Tilly and the Catholic League as well as about King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden and the Protestant Union. Among other things, the defence situation of Rothenburg in 1631 is also depicted. The dungeon of the former Free Imperial City of Rothenburg ob der Tauber below the town hall can be visited in conjunction with the historical vaults. It is considered to be the oldest prison in Rothenburg. The imperial city dungeon includes a guardroom, a torture room and three prison cells. The prison cells give an impression of the prison conditions at the time.
