"A man of many parts", a man of many talents, was Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914), a dazzling personality of the Fin de Siècle: famous portrait painter, but also musician, film director and initiator of the first car rally in Germany. Oscillating between tradition and modernity, he perfectly embodied the society of the turn of the century. The Herkomer Museum in the family's former home houses not only works of art but also the artist's private estate. Herkomer had the "Mutterturm" (Mother's Tower), an extraordinary monument of historicism, built from 1884 onwards according to his own plans; the largely original furnishings were created by members of his family themselves.Together with the surrounding landscape park, the museum and Mother's Tower form a total work of art on the banks of the Lech.
