Its location close to the border has always determined Waldmünchen's development - be it through border traffic and trade or through war and enmity. And so the relationship with its neighbour, the Czech Republic, and life on the border are also a focal point of the museum, giving it its name, and a formative event in the town's history forms the second main aspect of the museum: the siege of Waldmünchen in 1742 by the pandurobrist Franz Seraph Freiherr von der Trenck, a central figure in the War of the Austrian Succession. One section deals with the Trenck Festival, which has been held in Waldmünchen since 1950.
